Serious Basketball

Amanda is in 4th grade. She and 3 of her 4th grade friends were allowed to join the 5th/6th grade basketball team this year because not many girls went out for it. She loves it.

I remember playing basketball in 6th grade. I also remember being told that I played like a girl. Apparently that was a bad thing.

Amanda's team tries to get in 3 practices a week. It started out pretty intense, but now that there's only about a week left in the season, I'm noticing a little lack of focus in my daughter.

Yesterday after about 10 minutes of practice, she ran up to my office to get a snack. Seriously.

Me: What are you doing up here?

Amanda: Getting a snack.

Me: Aren't you supposed to be at basketball practice?

Amanda: Yeah, but we were all hungry, so Coach said we could get a snack.

Okaaaay.

Today she took the snack down with her, but about an hour into the practice, she brought her friend up to my office.

Me: What's going on?

Amanda: She's burnin' up and needs a ponytail holder. Can you give her one?

Me: Sure.

Wow. Taking breaks for snacks and ponytails.

Hard to believe they've only won one game.

"So Coach, is half-time when we get our manicures?"

  1. That's funny. I suppose it's good to ease them in? If you start them with the screaming coach who's all, "Get your fat lazy butts on the floor and give me 100" they're probably going to shy away from sports in general. I know you thought about doing it, Tami, but try to refrain.
